Cal State Fullerton STEM Internship and Career Expo

Events | November 7, 2015

Lydon Solutions was pleased to attend this year’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Internship and Career Expo on October 27th. The event was hosted by Cal State Fullerton’s Career Center, along with the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Engineering and Computer Science.

The event provided a great opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students studying computer science and engineering to discover internships, and to learn about potential employment opportunities.

Lydon Solutions was on-hand at the event to meet and talk with these bright, young minds and provide them with information about potential internships with our company. As our VP Rusty Ostboe explains, “Lydon Solutions is committed to providing opportunities to local talent in both Computer and Construction oriented fields.”

We were impressed by the caliber of students we talked with, and we appreciated having this chance to meet and talk with so many enthusiastic and eager minds pursuing STEM occupations.

An inspiring talk with young entrepreneurs at Penn State

Events | November 3, 2015

Sometimes you hear comments from people concerned about future generations.  After my recent trip to Penn State, I’m here to say that the future generations will be just fine given the opportunity.

I was honored to be invited to speak at the Penn State Entrepreneurship Seminar last week along with Martin (“Marty”) Nealon and Kirk DeForest of Medical Consulting Solutions. Marty, Kirk and I were asked to share our insights about starting and running our own businesses with young entrepreneurs from multiple disciplines at Penn State. The seminar was part of a relatively new cross-discipline entrepreneurship program at PSU. The program is gaining a lot of traction as a result of the dedication of mentors like Bob Beaury, the Interim Director of the Engineering Entrepreneurship Minor at PSU.

I was thoroughly impressed by the enthusiasm and motivation of these student entrepreneurs. They were engaged, asked smart questions, and had some great ideas for businesses. A highlight of the event for me was talking to the students individually after the presentations. Several were already well on their way with budding business of their own! It was inspiring.

Marty and I graduated from Penn State in 1993 and went on to work for large corporations most of our professional lives.  We became frustrated with the politics and lack of innovation in the corporate world at about the same time in our careers.  Ultimately, we branched out as entrepreneurs to do things better.  We were both fortunate to have incredible partners, mentors, and employees that believe in what we are doing and who go over and above to make our companies successful.

I joined Marty and Kirk at the Penn State event to give a little something back.  But I was reminded that mentoring works two ways. After a day of talking to a room full of intelligent, confident and savvy student entrepreneurs, I came away from my alma mater even more inspired myself.

3 takeaways from the 2015 CMAA National Conference

We are proud to have been a Bronze Sponsor at the 2015 CMAA National Conference held in Orlando last week. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth and came out for our presentation, ‘Microsoft Excel PowerPivot and SharePoint – The Perfect Solution’.

We always enjoy the opportunity to show the powerful features of the Lydon Solutions Construction Program Management Portal in person to industry professionals looking for a better way to manage their next project. Visitors to our booth were able to see firsthand the robust features of our Portal, including custom dashboards, collaboration features, and easy reporting tools.

Attendees at the CMAA conference came from construction companies ranging in size and resources. But all the industry professionals we met faced similar challenges.

Here are our three takeaways from the conference:

1.   Construction professionals love Excel: Our presentation on Microsoft Excel PowerPivot and SharePoint was a big hit with conference attendees. Several people came up to us afterward to say they were amazed at what is possible with Excel and SharePoint. They were unaware of the inherent functionality of these two applications and how simple it was to use them together. You can read more in our recent blog post about the power of Excel and SharePoint.

2.   Companies are looking to do more with Microsoft SharePoint: It’s no secret that we are big believers in SharePoint as an ideal Project Management Information System (PMIS). So we were thrilled to hear from companies big and small who were actively using SharePoint for every project. What they needed now was help taking SharePoint to the next level. We had several great conservations about simple enhancements to make SharePoint an even better fit for their workflow and business needs.

3.   There is a lot of frustration with custom solutions: We spoke with construction professionals from several companies frustrated with custom built PMIS solutions. These tools had been expensive to deploy, didn’t meet their needs and were poorly supported. This is a big problem for our industry. We’ve talked about why most construction PMIS implementation fail before.  And we’ve shared tips on how to deploy a PMIS for your construction business the right way.

The CMAA National Conference was a great chance to connect with friends, old and new. We especially enjoyed sharing our solution as well as learning from conference attendees. Not able to make it to this year’s event? Contact us to see how Lydon Solutions can help streamline your next project.

Events | July 8, 2015

Thanks to all of the attendees who stopped by our booth, presentation, and hospitality suite at this year’s AACE Annual Meeting in Las Vegas.  This was a great event, and we met a lot of engaging and accomplished construction owners and managers looking for better and easier ways to manage their projects.

Lydon Solutions was pleased to present our scalable project and information management solutions at the event. Visitors to our booth were able to see firsthand the powerful features of the Lydon Solutions Construction Program Management Portal, including custom dashboards, collaboration features, and easy reporting tools. Our integration with Oracle Primavera P6 generated quite a bit of buzz among construction professionals at the AACE event because it enables users to easily generate reports and interact with P6 data from within the Microsoft SharePoint portal. This provides a much needed option for teams to collaborate and run key reports outside of P6 – a definite time and cost saver! Read our “Oracle Primavera P6 hosting & SharePoint integration” blog post to learn more.

We also showed off a web-enabled Excel solution combining the rich functionality of the Excel Power Pivot add-on with the power of Microsoft SharePoint. This demo was a big hit with many AACE attendees because it demonstrated a simple way to use existing Excel cost reports, connect them to different data sources (including other Excel files), and utilize these reports as a robust cost-tracking application that is web-enabled. In fact, this demonstration was so popular, we will have more to say about web-enabling Excel to manage major projects in an upcoming blog post.

In the meantime, if you missed this year’s meeting or are interested in learning more about our products and services, make sure to contact us to schedule your free consultation.
